Parody of the Three Gods of Good Fortune

1845

Comment - Parody of the Three Gods of Good Fortune. This portrait is from a series featuring beauties as three of the famous Seven Lucky Gods. The beauty ont getas represents Daikoku, holding the white rats associated with the deity. The beauty's black kimono is bordered with kites in the shape of birds and bats. The kimono is tied with an obi decorated with waterwheels, matching the flowing river in the background. The river curves through the countryside, yellow mountain roses growing along the shore. Notice the small crab at lower left. The seven birds in the sky may be an allusion to the Seven Gods of Fortune.

The title of the print is not given. The print maybe part of a typtich representing the three top Lucky Gods Ebisu (  恵比寿), the God of Prosperity, Jurōjin (寿老人), the god of longevity and Daikoku (大黒天), the God of Wealth, all of them represented by top courtesans of the time as stand-ins (parody) or mitate.
