"A Humorous Naniwa Spot: Imamiya Ebisu"
("滑稽浪花名所 今宮戎")

late 1850ies

Comment - Naniwa is a historic name for todays Osaka. Ebisu, the god of prosperity in business and good fortune is enshrined in the Imamiya shrine in the Naniwa Ward. The scene shows two porters of a sedan chair. They stumbled, and the lady being carried nearly fell out of the sedan chair. Two other watchers seem to be in despair.  The background shows trees and a building, maybe the Imamiya Ebisu shrine. The silhouette of a far away mountain is to be seen, a fan kite or Sensu-tako (扇子凧) floats in the air.

The print is a typical kamigata-e or Osaka print.
