Painting

1879

Comment - Painting on paper by YOSHITOSHI of a yakko-dako ("yakko-dako", "Å«„J") or man kite fluttering in the breeze. The kite takes the form of a yakko or low-ranking servant with his kimono sleeves spread out like wings. YOSHITOSHI depicts a rather forlorn, unhappy looking figure, wearing a purple robe with an unusual carp pattern on the yellow collar, hanging open at the chest, over a red under robe. Beautifully rendered with delicate shading to add depth and a sense of movement to the fabric. The frame structure is shining through. Original YOSHITOSHI paintings are rarely seen.
