'Edo Kite Envelope'

Late Meiji Era/ Early Taisho Era (1910 - 30)

Comment - One of five small, decorative envelopes depicting various landscapes. This delicate design features an envelope with an Edo kite, both of his two tails floating in the misty air. A European-style mansion can be seen in the foreground, Mount Fuji is majestically rising in the hazy background.

This small ephemera is reminiscent to the free, romantic era of 1910 - 30 (Taisho - early Showa era). Although small in sizes, many of these envelopes were made in the highest standard of woodblock printing technique using such embellishments as embossing, metallic pigments, burnishing, etc.
