'Boys Flying a Kite'

(descriptive title)

TOYONOBU Ichikawa, "Boys Flying a Kite"

  "Boys Flying a Kite"

(pre 1785)

Comment - Two boys running hand-in-hand, flying an elegantly and simply drawn classical hawk-kite ("taka tako", "ú—„J") . A group of three ladies an a servant are strolling by, having a glimpse on those boys.

Early Edo Woodblocks are mostly monochrome in simple but wonderful detail. They primarily took the form of book illustrations, with few individual prints known by artists like Moronobu, who is often considered the founder of ukiyo-e.
