"Festival Celebrations at New Year"

1894 - 1904

Comment - Charming triptych depicting beauties and children celebrating New Year festival. At right, three women and a young girl gather around a red lacquer tray on the floor with a stack of cups and a lacquer bento box. At left, a beauty carries in a tray of sweets, while below, a mother reaches toward a girl holding a decorative battledore for hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton. The boy with the Western haircut behind her, smiles happily. He is carrying a large Edo kite ("Edo-tako", "½‘õ„J") depicting Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan. At right, the scene is framed by a floral arrangement of pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms in a yellow vase with a parrot on it. Bamboo and pine are traditional decorations for the New Year holiday. The background shows a table with a scarf and a turtle, maybe a hint at an auspicius action. Embossing in the white kimono collars.
