Comment - Handsome view of the Kameido
Plum Garden. Kameido is a well that was the source of water
for the castle town of Takamatsu during the Edo period. The
origin of the name of Kameido comes from the the hole
from which a spring water flows that is shaped like a jar, and
it was called Tortoise Well of the immortal Soul (Kamei
Reisen, 亀井霊泉). The spring and garden are the source for the
still existing Kameido Water Shrine (Kameido sui-jinja,
亀井戸水神社).
The print depicts a springtime sake party with
five participantsis. The festivity is disrupted by a crashed
down
Edo kite
("Edo-tako", "江戸凧"). The correctly bridled crashed down Edo
kite, carries a
design
variation of the Japanese flag. The kite fell headfirst
onto the sake table, a sake bottle is just falling down. The
lady on the right received a chin smash from the upgoing
table, the gentleman with the black kimono is directly hit by
the kite. The gentleman opposite to the chin smashed lady, has
fallen on his back and stretches out on all fours. He is
losing one of his yellow sandals, and crying out loud. A
spectator from the next table wears a western style hat with a
brim. He watches the mishap with smiling astonishment. The
lower left shows a straw rooftop, maybe the beverage
dispensing hut. A lady is rushing out to her customers.
The background shows the fenced plum garden with lots of old
and young blossoming plum trees. In the far above red nearing
sundown, an
Edo Kaku kite
, the smaller brother of an Edo kite is floating in the
evening sky, as the long tails are indicating the smooth
breeze. A smooth
bokashi
blue sky is overwhelming the scene.
The series title is written in the red cassette upper right,
