'Playing Games at New Year's'

(earlier than 1907)

Comment - Charming triptych showing traditional New Year's games. At right, two beauties play Hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton with decorative battledores and a feathered shuttlecock, which hangs in the air between them. The paddle at right depicts a kabuki actor in the lead role of the play "Shibaraku". Just behind them, a young boy holds a lavender Edo kite ("Edo-kaku", "江戸角") with a Kanji character on it (Kanji kite, "ji tako", "字凧"). At left, two girls bounce a colorful ball back and forth. New Year's holiday arrangements of kadomatsu pine and bamboo frame the scene.
