Artist – SHIMIZU
Kahei (清水嘉兵衛 or 清水嘉兵工) was a real estate wholesaler in the
Meiji period. During the Meiji period, he operated as real
estate wholesaler and editor at 2 Nabecho, Kanda Ward. Among
others, he published Utagawa Kunitoshi and Utagawa Hiroshige
III. He was well known for the edition of the first overall 12
volume collection of YAMAMURA Seisuke's detailed Maps of Japan
(Dai Nihon
setsu ezu tōgoku, 大日本切絵図 東国". It is not unknown, that editors
are also artists and have produced ukiyo-e.
There
are no ukiyo-e on the market that can be clearly
attributed to SHIMIZU Kahei as an artist.
It is possible
that the prints attributed to SHIMIZU merely reflect his
role as publisher.
