Artist – KATO
Tatsusaburō (加藤辰三郎) is a third generation kite master (SanDaiMe
Tako Hachi, 三代目 凧八)
from Shizuoka City (静岡市). He was named Kite-Hachi (凧八) and had a still existing
Studio in Aoi Ward,
Shizuoka City (静岡市葵区). The studio is also named "Kite
Hachi", and has a long tradition since the end
of the Edo period.
His pre predecessor Hachizo (八蔵) was a Samurai- like
official in the Kinza (金座) mint. As a decommissioned
official, he had to make a living and began painting
and making kites to earn extra money. The name
"Kite Hachi" was derived from the name of Hachi-zo.
KATO Tatsusaburō's workshop is
nowadays managed by his great granddaughter GOTO Hikaru
(後藤 光, *1971) in fifth generation
after her grandma KATO Asako (加藤阿さ子). KATO Tatsusaburō was well known
for his colourful kite paintings, mostly Edo kites, Rokaku kites and as a
specialty Suruga kites
(駿河凧). A special
concern for him was the preservation and dissemination
of this kind of vanishing art.
