Artist – Utagawa
HIROKAGE (歌川 広景), also known as Ichiyūsai HIROKAGE (一勇斎 広景),
was a Japanese designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, who was
active from about 1854 to 1868. He was a pupil of Utagawa
HIROSHIGE. From 1860 to 1861, HIROKAGE designed the series of
ōban size prints titled "Edo meisho dōke zukushi" ("江戸名所道化尽";
Joyful Events in Famous Places in Edo). His reputation is
based primarily upon this series and his 1859 triptych "Aomono
sakana gunzei ô-kassen no zu" ("青物魚軍勢大合戦之図", The Great Battle
between the Fruits and Vegetables and the Fish).
Personal
life - There is only sparse
information about HIROKAGE. From his prints we may calculate
an active time from about 1854 to 1868.
