Artist – HASEGAWA SADANBU-II (二代
長谷川貞信), KANO SHUGEN (狩野 秀源), later KONUBU-I (初代小信) studied at
first at his father
HASEGAWA
SADANOBU-I (1809-1879), and afterwards with Osai
YOSHIUME (鶯斎 芳梅;
1819-1879). He spent about three years in Kobe starting in 1867
during which he produced a number of prints showing scenes of
the impact of Westerners in and around the city. First of all he
used his
go (artist name)
Konobu (小信). Upon the death of his father Sadanobu I in 1879, he
used "Sadanobu"as his personal go.
His print designs include
yakusha-e (actor
prints),
kacho-ga or
fukei-ga (landscapes),
kaika-e
(depictions of modernizations),
senso-e (wartime prints,
mostly of the the Sino-Japanese War),
kuchi-e (illustrations
for novels),
hikifuda
(promotional leaflets or advertisements), as well as
nishiki-e shinbun
(prints for newspaper supplements).
Personal life - HASEGAWA SADANBU-II was born in 1848 as
HASEGAWA Tokutarō (長谷川徳太朗) in Osaka. His father was HASEGAWA
SADANOBU-I (1809-1879). The Hasegawa family has a lineage of
artists up to the 21st century, at least up to 2003. They mainly
used "KONUBU" as thei go. All of them were blood relations,
i.e., sons and one daughter, and none were adopted into the
lineage. He had a younger brother (KONOBU-II, 1866-1886), and a
son, HASEGAWA SADANOBU-III aka Konobu-III (1881-1963). HASEGAWA
SADANBU-II died in Osaka June 21, 1940 (aged 91).
Aliases - HASEGAWA Tokutarō (長谷川徳太朗) as
his birth name, KANO SHUGEN (狩野 秀源) as ga, later KONUBU
(小信), and HASEGAWA SADANBU-II (二代 長谷川貞信) after 1879.
Disciples - Little is known about his disciples. His
younger brother (KONOBU-II, 1866-1886) was considered one of his
students, as well as his son HASEGAWA SADANOBU-III aka
Konobu-III (1881-1963)
