Artist – FUJITA
Fumio (藤田不美夫) was born in 1933 in in Handa City, Aichi
Prefecture, about 40km south of Nagoya. His Nickname was "Forest Painter",
as he stated in an 2005 interview, thus we find an quite a lot
of his woodblock prints with all kinds of trees.
He
attended the renowned Musashino College of Fine Arts in Tokyo
(Musahino Bijitsu Gakko), and graduated in 1956, when he also
had been teaching there. From 1958 until 1963 he had a job as
graphic designer in Tokyo, afterwards moved to Atsugi City,
some 50 kilometers west of the capital, where he is still
living. In late 1987 he became a full-time lecturer at the
Odakyu Culture School department of woodblock printing.
In Atsugi he joined the Niji No Kai (虹の会) or "Rainbow
Association". He became a quite well known member of te
sosaku hanga
movement and exhibited in several reknown exhibions as of
Japan Print Association, and in the College Women's
Association of Japan (CWAJ). The CWAJ Print Show is a highly
respected annual exhibition and sale of contemporary Japanese
prints. About these years he also became a resident artist in
a Ginza gallery. He exhibited regularly with "Kokugakai", a
Japanese printmaker association. Many more exhibitions of his
woodblock prints followed 1980ies, 90ies and early 2000s.
Because of back problems he is no longer carving woodblocks,
but continues to to paint in oil and water colours.
FUJITA Fumio's
prints were published at a certain phase of his career by Watanabe Print House
(版元渡邊版畫店). The Watanabe print shop was the epitome of the shin
hanga art movement. It is supposed that Watanabe was at some
stage also involved in the technical realization of his
woodblock prints, thus leaving the true way of Shin Hanga. But he has always been
designating himself as an 'independent artist' and not being
associated with any kind of movement. Since the 90ies he
gradually moved to self publishing of all of his works. He has
an on-line gallery (ギャラリー 藤田不美夫) maintained by his daughter
(2020).
FUJITA Fumio's subjects are mostly nature based, and he is
best known for his many images of trees, especially birch
trees. He simplifies and reduces forms to their elements,
bordering on abstract, with an emphasis on pattern and
texture. He has created stylized natural landscapes which have
become increasingly popular for their intricate designs.
